Opting For Warehouse Transportation As a Job

Warehousing industry and supply chain management has provided a great number of job opportunities for people belonging to different natures and levels of work. Take for example the Los Angeles supply chain industry where a Public warehouse is a source of regular income for countless people. The jobs offered due to these industries are not just at managerial level but also on the operational level. One reason behind these countless jobs offered by the industry is that it involves a number of processes and services such as pick and pack, and logistics. Let us again take the example of fulfillment services, which involve product inquiry, sales quote, invoicing, shipping, delivery and many other processes. All of these processes require a number of employees to carry out different tasks.

One very important role played in the whole supply chain process is of the truck transportations. It is estimated that truck drivers hold more than 40 percent of all the jobs in the warehousing industry. Generally, warehousing firms also provide trucking services and the warehousing contract involves storage, delivery, pick up and transport. We can roughly classify the transport services in two types,

• General freight trucking: This type of trucking involves general transportation vehicles such as trucks and trailers for over the road transportation of general goods. It can be either a local distance freight trucking or a long distance freight trucking. One example of local freight trucking is the delivery truck which picks the products from a manufacturer everyday, and distributes it to the different local grocery stores. A long distance freight truck can travel through a distant area for example from US to Canada.

• Specialized Freight trucking: This type of trucking involves vehicles that are made to transport specific types of products such as flatbed trucks or freezer trucks. These vehicles transport only specific type of commodities, for example, a tanker can only be used to transport a liquid product. It also further divided into local and long distance freight trucking. The local truckers usually have a fixed working of 8 to 9 hours but the long distance trucking can involve long and tiring working hours.

The trucking industry does not only involve truck drivers. A number of other staff members is also responsible to carry out the transportation process. There are many clerical jobs in the industry that require computer literate personnel to handle different office tasks. Mechanics, repairmen, workshop supervisors are also needed. These people usually do not need any prior qualification and can start as general helpers. The on job experience and learning may help in advancing. Most of the jobs in this industry do not require a very high educational qualification.

Although the salary and wages offered in this job depend greatly on the economical situation, the demand for trucking and warehouse transport is ever increasing. This is because more and more businesses are now relying upon public and contract warehouses to handle their storage and transportation needs. There seems to be thriving demand of trucking related personnel in the coming future.
